About Us

Who are we?

'Bunkhouses in Wales' is the web-site of the Association of Bunkhouse Operators (Wales) and the above question is best answered by outlining the history of the Association.

Bothies, bunkhouses and hostels of differing styles and sizes have been in existence for many decades providing simple accommodation for adventure-seeking individuals and groups.

In the late 1970s the Countryside Commission and the Yorkshire Dales National Park began a new initiative and grant-aided the conversion of a number of redundant agricultural barns into bunkhouse accommodation. By 1984 there were 5 such 'bunkhouse barns' in operation located strategically close to the long distance footpaths. It was thought that these bunkhouses would attract hikers from the long distance walkways for a simple one-night stay. While this was the case, an unexpected market began to evolve. Experience soon showed that the bunkhouses were popular with groups that wanted to stay for 2 or 3 nights or more, using the bunkhouse as a base from which to undertake the many activities in the area. They required 'sole occupancy' so that they could determine their own programme and routine, rather than having to conform to the rules of a shared hostel. Over the years bunkhouses have evolved to cater for both these markets and spread throughout the UK.

The Association of Bunkhouse Operators (Wales) started life in the Brecon Beacons area of Mid Wales, where the majority of its membership is still based. It was recognised that the owners, proprietors or operators of bunkhouses had matters of common interest or concern and as a consequence in 1994 the Association of Bunkhouse Operators (Wales) was formed.

What are our aims

The Association members work together in matters of mutual concern such as operations, finance, marketing, technical matters; and to provide effective communications with other organisations, all with the mutual purpose of promoting and enabling the business success of members' enterprises.

This web-site and http://www.bootsbikesbunkhouses.co.uk are just two examples of our joint marketing activities.

Who can join us?

If you are interested in joining the Association and advertising with us you need to become a Marketing Member. Below is a summary of what this means:

Membership

a) 'Basic Membership' is open to operators, and potential operators, of one or more bunkhouses located in Wales who are in sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Association and agree to comply with our Constitution.
b) 'Marketing Membership' is open to Basic Members of the Association who operate at least one bunkhouse in Wales, provided they comply with the Association's 'Marketing Policy' document. Essentially this means you must be accredited by Visitwales, comply with our own 'Minimum Standards for Bunkhouses' and pay your subscription fees!

Subscriptions

a) All Members of the Association pay an annual Basic Subscription.
b) An additional Marketing Subscription will be levied against Marketing Members to cover forthcoming marketing activities, which includes this website. The rate for this is currently calculated partly on a flat fee basis and partly related to the number of beds you have.

How can we be contacted?

If you would like to enquire further and request copies of our Constitution, Marketing Policy, Minimum Standards and a Membership Application Form then please contact us via our 'call-centre' (Tel: 07071 780259).
